Two Different Warranties, Not One

Most fence projects come with two separate warranties, and it's easy to mix them up.

Manufacturer's warranty: This covers the material itself, things like a vinyl panel cracking, a chain-link coating peeling, or an aluminum fitting corroding. It comes from the company that made the product, not the installer, and it's usually the longer of the two warranties. Manufacturers often back their materials for 10, 20, even 30 years or more, depending on the product line.

• DIY modifications. Cutting, drilling, or altering a fence after installation can void both the material and workmanship warranty.

• Is the material warranty from the manufacturer, and is it transferable if you sell the home?
• How long is the workmanship warranty, and does it cover labor to fix a problem, or just the material?
• Does the warranty require any specific maintenance, like annual sealing for wood, to stay valid?
• What's the process for filing a claim, and who do you contact?
• Are there exclusions specific to your fence material or your property (slope, soil, drainage)?

Get the answers in writing. A verbal promise about "we'll take care of it" isn't the same as a documented warranty term. It won't help you if the company changes hands or the person you talked to moves on.

Why This Varies by Material
