Gate work falls into two categories: new installation and repair.

Why Gates Fail

Most gate problems trace back to the post, not the gate itself. A gate is a lever working against its hinge post every time it swings. Ground conditions across this part of the Upper Cumberland vary too, from rocky plateau soil to karst terrain to rolling highland ground, depending on where the property sits. Around Cookeville specifically, posts often go into rocky, cherty subsoil that's harder to dig and compact properly than the soil found in the Nashville Basin to our west. If the post wasn't set deep enough or in enough concrete to begin with, it'll lean over time and the gate will start dragging or dropping at the latch end. We check post condition first on every repair call. Replacing a hinge on a leaning post just means replacing that hinge again in a year.

Farm and pasture gates take a different kind of wear: livestock leaning on them, tractors clipping the frame, constant opening and closing in mud or standing water. We build and repair these gates for that use, not like a decorative yard gate.

We start with an on-site look at the gate opening, the fence it connects to, and the ground conditions. For new installations, we confirm the opening width against what actually needs to pass through it: truck, tractor, riding mower. We also check whether the property falls under an area where the city or county planning department should be consulted before work starts. For repairs, we diagnose whether the problem is the gate, the hinges, or the post before recommending a fix, so you're not paying to replace parts that aren't the actual issue.

From there we handle post-setting or resetting, hardware sized to the gate's weight and use, and final adjustment so the gate swings and latches correctly. We stand behind the work the same way we do on any new fence installation or fence repair job.
